She later moved beyond the character and established herself as a recording artist under her own name.
How Old Was Miley Cyrus When Hannah Montana Started?
Miley Cyrus was 13 when she auditioned for Hannah Montana. The series became a defining part of her childhood and teenage years, introducing her to a worldwide audience while allowing her to perform music as both Miley Stewart and the fictional pop star Hannah Montana.
Her transition from Disney star to adult recording artist happened gradually. In 2008, she released Breakout, her first chart-topping album as a solo artist. The following year, “Party In The U.S.A.” became one of her signature songs, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Her career also demonstrates how strongly her artistic identity has changed over time. The Disney era established her as a teen entertainer, while later projects gave her greater control over her sound and image. Bangerz, for example, represented a significant departure from the style associated with Hannah Montana. Later releases continued that experimentation.
“Flowers,” released in 2023, became another major turning point. The song appeared on Endless Summer Vacation, Cyrus’ eighth studio album, and earned her first GRAMMY wins in 2024. She won both Record Of The Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
Her awards history continued in 2025, when she won Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “II MOST WANTED,” her collaboration with Beyoncé on COWBOY CARTER.
